Storage for AI workloads: design the data path, not just capacity
Separate active datasets, shared files and protected copies to build a storage brief that matches the way your AI services use data.

Follow a dataset through the system
An AI data path often starts with ingestion, continues through preparation and repeated reads, and ends with retained results or archives. Buying capacity alone overlooks the time spent waiting for data at each stage. Draw the path from source to compute node and identify which stages run together. That map helps reveal whether local working storage, a shared service or a network connection needs attention first.
Separate performance from retention
Measure typical file sizes, read and write patterns, active dataset size, growth and simultaneous jobs. Small random reads and large sequential transfers should not share an assumed performance target. Define a fast working tier for active data and a capacity tier for retained data where appropriate. Reserve capacity for metadata, rebuilds and operational headroom rather than treating every installed byte as application space.
Choose the platform and drives together
The Supermicro SSG-121E-NES24R in our catalog is a 1U storage platform with support for 24 E1.S NVMe drive positions according to its manufacturer. Supported positions do not mean that drives, capacity or a storage software license are included. Confirm exact drive part numbers, firmware, endurance requirements and software support before calculating usable capacity or quoting a complete system.
Build protection into the design
Agree how much data can be lost and how long a service can remain unavailable. Use these requirements to plan protection, backups and restore testing. Redundant components and storage replication serve different purposes from a recoverable backup. Document who operates the backup process and how protected copies are separated from the live environment. Test recovery with representative data before accepting the system.
Submit a storage inquiry with operating context
Include current and forecast capacity, sample file sizes, workload concurrency, required client interfaces and existing network links. Add the recovery objectives, retention requirements and any site restrictions. Ask for a proposal that separates raw capacity, usable capacity, performance assumptions, licenses and support. Acceptance should measure the intended data path under realistic concurrent use, rather than rely on an isolated device benchmark.
